I was born and raised in Edmonton-Treaty 6 Territory, Alberta with Cantonese and Irish ancestry. I am based in Vancouver/Richmond Coast Salish Territories. I was a member of Edmonton’s 2012 Slam Poetry Team, and a member of the festival ensemble at the 2013 and 2015 Victoria Festival of Spoken Word. My work has been published in Ricepaper Magazine, and screened at the 2010 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. I’ve worked on environmental radio news stories with CJSR FM 88.5’s Terra Informa.

  1. Hi, Kathryn. Thing is neither English nor Cantonese is my first language; it’s Hoisan (Toisan, 台山) in our family home. We picked up Cantonese “on the streets”, and, naturally, English at school and on tv. Now, many years later, I will sometimes confuse Cantonese pronunciation of words with Hoisan. But I’ll look upon and follow your word-of-the-day with both pronunciations in my head. 😉
